Why regular STI testing matters in Sydney

Sydney has one of Australia’s highest rates of sexually transmitted infections, and NSW has seen a steady rise in syphilis, gonorrhoea and chlamydia notifications over the past decade. Many STIs cause no symptoms at all — which means the only reliable way to know your status is to get tested.

Regular testing is one of the most important things you can do for your sexual health, your partners’ health, and the wider community. The good news: if you have a valid Medicare card, your STI check at Equality Health is Bulk Billed — there is no out-of-pocket cost.

What to expect at your appointment

A relaxed, confidential conversation: Your GP will ask about your sexual history, symptoms (if any), and any concerns you’d like to discuss. The conversation is private, non-judgemental and tailored to you.

A sexual health screen that suits you: Depending on your history, this may include testing for chlamydia, gonorrhoea, syphilis, HIV, and hepatitis B and C. Tests may involve a blood sample, urine sample and/or self-collected swabs

Clear, plain-English results: We’ll explain what your results mean, what (if anything) needs follow-up, and what your options are.

Ongoing sexual health care: From PrEP and Doxy-PEP through to vaccinations, gender-affirming care and general GP support — we can look after the bigger picture too. Equality Health GPs are skilled in managing both acute and chronic sexual health conditions, offering treatments, care plan and ongoing support for issues such as STIs, sexual dysfunction, and hormone therapy.

Respectful and Inclusive Care: We pride ourselves on providing care that is respectful of your sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression. Our approach ensures that every interaction is supportive and free from judgement.

Your information is not shared without your permission, except where the law requires (for example, certain notifiable infections are reported to NSW Health in a de-identified way).

It depends on your sexual activity and history. As a general guide, sexually active gay and bisexual men are recommended to test every 3–12 months. Anyone with new or multiple partners should consider testing at least once a year. Your GP will help you work out what’s right for you.
