Bulk Billed PrEP in Sydney

At Equality Health GPs provide comprehensive Bulk Billed PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) services tailored to the needs of the LGBTIQA+ community.

PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is a daily or on-demand medication that, when taken as prescribed, can significantly reduce the risk of acquiring HIV. At Equality Health Darlinghurst, LGBTIQA+ friendly GPs make starting and staying on PrEP simple with Bulk Billed consultations available to everyone with a valid Medicare card, in person at our Darlinghurst clinic or by telehealth from anywhere in Australia.

Our aim is to empower you with the information and resources needed to make informed decisions about your sexual health while reducing the risk of HIV transmission.

And here’s the best part: you don’t need to be an existing patient to book a Bulk Billed telehealth consult with us. Under current Medicare telehealth rules, sexual health consultations (including PrEP) are exempt from the usual 12-month established-relationship requirement. So even if you’re outside Sydney and have never seen us before, you can book a telehealth appointment with one of our GPs and have it fully Bulk Billed — no out-of-pocket cost, no hoops to jump through.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Initial assessment: Your GP will discuss your sexual health, current health, any medications you take and your goals for PrEP. This is a non-judgemental conversation, not a quiz.

Baseline testing: Before you start PrEP, you’ll need a blood test to confirm you are HIV-negative, and a few other baseline tests (including kidney function and an STI screen). Hepatitis B status will be checked.

3-monthly reviews: Standard PrEP care includes a check-in every 3 months for an HIV and STI screen, kidney check and a chat about how things are going. We make this easy — you can come in or do it by telehealth.

Vaccinations: If you’re not already protected, your GP may recommend hepatitis A and hepatitis B vaccinations, and check whether you’re up to date on Mpox and HPV vaccines.

POPULAR QUESTIONS

Your consultation with a Equality Health GP at our Darlinghurst Clinic is Bulk Billed for all patients with a valid Medicare card, so the appointment itself has no out-of-pocket cost. The medication is subsidised through the PBS, so you pay the standard PBS co-payment at the pharmacy (less if you hold a concession card).

Your GP will explain timing in detail at your appointment. As a general guide, daily PrEP needs to be taken for a number of days before reliable protection is achieved for different types of sex. On-demand PrEP has a different schedule. Your GP will walk you through the correct dosing for your situation.

No. PrEP only protects against HIV. That’s why regular STI testing every 3 months is built into standard PrEP care, and why some patients also consider Doxy-PEP (a separate service we offer).

Yes — but the costs are different. The consultation may attract a fee, and the medication is more expensive without PBS subsidisation. There are still pathways to access PrEP affordably; speak to our team.

No. You can book directly with one of our GPs online or by phone.

Most of your PrEP care can be done by telehealth — your consult, scripts, reviews and pathology referrals. You’ll still need to attend a pathology collection centre near you for blood tests and swabs. We can refer you to one close to home, anywhere in Sydney or Australia.

Your GP will arrange a HIV and STI screen and a check of your kidney function, ask how PrEP is working for you, and renew your script. It’s usually a short, straightforward catch-up.
